Simon Heaton lives in Enfield and volunteers with the Over 50s Forum. He read about the energy efficiency 'train the trainer' sessions offered through the Community Action Partnership (CAP) and decided to give it a go. After completing the 'train the trainer' level 1 and the 'energy awareness' level 2 courses he began to pass his energy knowledge onto other volunteers. He has now taken part in a number of advice sessions to local groups as well as providing advice at some of the Over 50s Forum events.

Simon helped one client called Mrs. Thomas, she had told him of some problems she was having with damp and condensation in her home. Simon provided some advice and information on what he thought the issue was and how to get help for problems with damp and condensation; she followed his advice and engaged a trusted local builder to take a look. The builder confirmed Simon’s first thoughts and fixed the problem. Not only was Mrs. Thomas grateful for the advice Simon had provided but Simon also took further comfort from having the confidence to give her the correct information and help her improve the condition of her home.

Simon said, "After taking part in the training sessions I now feel well equipped to provide advice to Enfield residents on a number of energy topics including helping them to calculate the running costs of appliances, dealing with damp and condensation and advising them on the best way to save energy in their home."

"Since taking part in the training I have run several advice sessions for residents and community group clients in Enfield and feel confident in passing my knowledge onto others. One of these groups regularly takes part in home visits so they are now equipped with a knowledge of energy efficiency which will enable them to recognise the signs of fuel poverty when out on home visits as well as providing them with the advice they need."

"I also learnt a lot from the 'train the trainer' sessions including tips on how to deliver certain aspects of the course to make it more digestible to understand. I enjoyed learning the background knowledge behind the energy advice; this made the information more retainable."
